Why your salary changes from month to month
Your in-hand pay is gross earnings minus deductions, and almost every line on an Indian payslip can move. This tool lines up two payslips, works out the change in each line, and ranks them by how much they moved your take-home, with a plain-English reason for each.
Earnings change with a hike (usually basic, HRA and special allowance together), with loss-of-pay days (every line shrinks in proportion), and with one-off items such as a bonus, incentive or arrears from a late hike. Deductions change too. Employee PF is 12% of basic + DA, so it follows your basic; if your employer uses the statutory wage ceiling, the cap rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 from 17 September 2026, which lifts the deduction from ₹1,800 to ₹3,000 a month. Professional tax depends on your state, and Maharashtra deducts ₹300 instead of ₹200 in February.
TDS is the line that surprises people most. Your employer re-estimates your tax for the whole year every month and divides what is still due by the months left, so a bonus, arrears, a regime switch or missing investment proofs can push one month's TDS sharply up. A rise in TDS after a hike is normal: it's tax on the extra income, not a mistake.
Everything you type stays in your browser. If a change still looks wrong after this, ask your HR or payroll team for the working, quoting the line and the amount.
