What Your Payslip Decoder Checks

Your salary slip contains two sections: earnings (what your employer pays you) and deductions (what is removed before money reaches your bank). Most Indians only look at the net pay — missing critical errors that cost them money every month.

The most common payslip error is incorrect PF deduction. PF should be 12% of your basic salary, capped at a maximum of ₹1,800/month because the statutory wage ceiling is ₹15,000. If your basic is ₹40,000 and your payslip shows ₹4,800 in PF, your employer is deducting on actual basic — check whether this was specified in your offer letter. If your payslip shows ₹0 PF and your basic is under ₹15,000, this may be a legal violation.

The second most valuable check is HRA exemption. If you pay rent and live under the old tax regime, you should be claiming HRA exemption under Section 10(13A). The exempt amount is the minimum of: actual HRA received, 50% of basic (metro) or 40% (non-metro), and rent paid minus 10% of basic. If you haven't submitted rent receipts to HR, your employer is deducting full TDS on your HRA — you're overpaying tax every month.
