Why mandates are easy to lose track of

  1. A UPI AutoPay mandate is stored in the UPI app you used to approve it, not in one central list you can see by default.
  2. If you approved Netflix in PhonePe and JioHotstar in Google Pay, each app only shows its own mandate, even though both debit the same bank account.
  3. So checking one app is not enough: check every UPI app you have ever linked to that account.

Step 1: check each UPI app

  1. Google Pay: profile photo → Autopay.
  2. PhonePe: profile icon → AutoPay (under Payment management).
  3. Paytm: Profile → Automatic Payments / UPI AutoPay.
  4. BHIM: Mandates. Also look at the UPI Help section (NPCI), which can show mandates linked to your account across apps.
  5. Amazon Pay, CRED, WhatsApp Pay and bank apps (iMobile, YONO, HDFC MobileBanking) can hold mandates too: look for AutoPay or Mandates in their menus.

Step 2: cross-check with your bank statement

  1. Download 6 to 12 months of statements and look for repeating UPI debits to the same merchant.
  2. Yearly mandates (OTT annual plans, insurance) are the easiest to forget because they debit only once a year.
  3. The free Subscription Leak Finder does this automatically and flags each UPI payment it finds.

Step 3: revoke what you don't need

  1. Open the mandate in the app that holds it → Cancel / Revoke → enter your UPI PIN.
  2. Also cancel the subscription inside the service, or it may switch to another payment method.
  3. Keep a screenshot of the revoked mandate in case you are charged again.

Use the pre-debit alert

  1. Before each AutoPay debit you receive a pre-debit notification (SMS or in-app) that names the merchant and the app holding the mandate.
  2. When you see an alert for something you don't use, revoke it right then, before the money leaves.
Good to know: Pausing a mandate (some apps allow it) is temporary: it resumes automatically. Revoke it if you want it gone for good. Revoking does not refund past debits; ask the merchant for those.

How it shows on your bank statement

Look for lines like these in your bank, credit card or UPI history:

Also stop the auto-debit

Cancelling inside the service is the main step. If you paid with UPI AutoPay, a card standing instruction or a NACH mandate, check that the mandate is gone too.
